Deur goes out on top

from on .

It鈥檚 impossible to look at the Calvin board and miss the listing E. Deur.听 It鈥檚 posted four times鈥攂ehind every existing diving category.

"I didn鈥檛 ever imagine that I would break any records when I came here,鈥 said senior Erica Deur, the diver behind the record-board postings. 鈥淚 just wanted to be part of a sports team because I loved it.鈥

Breaking records has become a habit for Deur, who not only holds Calvin records in both the one- and three-meter events for six and 11 dives, but also holds both MIAA records.

National championship

Her most recent accomplishment includes 鈥攚hich she set in 2007鈥攖wice at the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship, once in the preliminaries and then again in the finals.

Her finals score of 496.05 resulted in her second career national championship.听 She was then named the NCAA III . Deur was joined at the 2009 NCAAs by eight Calvin swimmers and by fellow Calvin divers Casey Herman (middle), who also , and Jeena Velzen (far right).

For Deur being with teammates at nationals was even better than breaking records.

"I never think about breaking records,鈥 said Deur. 鈥淚 try to focus on getting a better score 鈥攄oing the dives better than ever before.鈥

Open to changes, challenges

She not only does the dives better, explained coach Aaron Paskvan, who was named , she does dives that no one else does. 鈥淚鈥檝e not seen another female diver do a front one and one-half with three twists,鈥 he said. 鈥淚n fact, I haven鈥檛 seen many males do that dive.鈥

It鈥檚 Deur鈥檚 willingness to challenge herself that makes her so good, Paskvan said. 鈥淪he expects to be getting to a certain level and then when she gets there, she鈥檚 not satisfied,鈥 he said. 鈥淪he鈥檚 open to changes in her dives, and the challenge is fun to her.鈥

Deur admitted it鈥檚 not easy to try a new dive. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very scary to get yourself to go the first time,鈥 she said.

New pool, softer landings

It鈥檚 been a little easier since the completion of the this past January.听 The training belt on the one-meter board and the bubbler (which decreases the pool鈥檚 surface area and makes for a softer landing) in the new pool have helped. 鈥淪ometimes when I walk in this facility, I still can鈥檛 believe it,鈥 she said. 鈥淏eing able to train here for the last part of my career has been incredible.鈥

Formerly a gymnast, Deur began her diving career as an eighth grader.听 鈥淚 was used to flipping around in the air, so that gave me a jump start,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here is a lot of skill transfer between the two sports.鈥

After finishing third in the state as a senior at Holland Christian High School, Deur came to Calvin because of the . "I didn鈥檛 want to be a scholarship athlete,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 wanted the opportunity to be involved in other things and be an athlete. At Calvin I didn鈥檛 have to choose between a social life and athletics; I got to do it (dive) because I love it.鈥

Good coaching, team support

Deur believes she improved quickly at Calvin because of good coaching and a lot of team support. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been great to have so many peers around me of the same faith. We all support each though prayer and our common bond of faith. And the coaching has been intense. This allows you to get a lot better faster. Coach (Paskvan) uses a ton of analogies that help us understand what we need to fix.鈥

In fact, Deur improved so quickly she was named the MIAA鈥檚 most valuable diver as a freshman, a title she never surrendered in the following three years.

鈥淲orking with her has been a joy,鈥 said Paskvan. 鈥淪he鈥檒l be missed not only for her strong finishes, but everything she brings to the team in terms of relationships and leadership.鈥

Time to move on

She described the ending of her career as bittersweet. 鈥淢y body is telling me it鈥檚 time to be done being an athlete; but having it truly be done, well, I鈥檒l miss it. This was definitely the best way to conclude my college career. I could not ask for anything more.鈥

Deur, who graduates with a recreation major and psychology minor in May, hopes to find a job working for a non-profit with kids and sports. She is marrying fellow Calvin senior Kyle Engbers in July.

鈥淚t鈥檚 tough to stay involved with diving once you graduate,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not something you can do recreationally, but I would love to look for a coaching position sometime in the future.鈥
