Litigation Associate, Covington & Burling LLP

I work as a litigation associate in the New York office of a large international firm. Just a year out of law school, I鈥檓 still exploring practice areas, but most of my work is in product liability. The most rewarding part of the job is how much I get to learn. I love consuming information, and every assignment requires me to get up to speed quickly on new topics. I鈥檓 also acquiring a deeper understanding of how American legal institutions work, which gives me an interesting perspective on how society hangs together.

Studying history prepared me well for this work. Writing clearly and effectively is a critical skill in litigation. Writing skills may be even more important now, in the age of LLMs, and they鈥檙e probably becoming harder to acquire, so I鈥檓 grateful for that training.

Learning the historian鈥檚 craft is excellent preparation for litigation. Much of trial work is reconstructing what really happened. The adversarial system often feels like rival historical schools battling it out鈥攁n intellectual exercise that can be quite enjoyable. It is no surprise that many of the people I work with studied history or philosophy before entering law.
