Executive Director, Pella Historical Museums

Throughout my life, I have been surrounded by connections to the past, and I am grateful for the ways this has shaped my worldview. Studying History at Calvin solidified my desire to work in public history, making the study of history accessible to people of all ages and life stages. I now serve as the Executive Director of Pella Historical Museums & Tulip Time in Pella, Iowa, where I plan activities that bring history to life for young students, organize events where longtime community members can share their memories, and create an environment where culture, creativity, and community thrive. It’s also rewarding to know that our work draws visitors to the area and boosts the local economy.

My time at Calvin opened my eyes to seeing history – and the present – through perspectives other than my own. I learned that practicing empathy makes us better historians, and this lesson has guided my work at Pella Historical. Calvin’s History Department also made me a better writer, communicator, and analytical thinker. A double major in History and Communication prepared me well for both my career and my life as a thoughtful member of my community.
