Emergency Medicine Administrator, University of Michigan Health

I went to Calvin planning to attend medical school, and studied history as a side interest. But my History major led me to appreciate how systems work over time to influence society, which opened my eyes to the broader systems that underpin health in the U.S., including healthcare delivery. This led me to combine my interests in history and science with a second major in Public Health.

After graduation I earned a Master's degree in Health Care Administration at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. I now work as the Manager of Administrative Operations for the Department of Emergency Medicine at U of M Health. I regularly use skills in my work I that I learned from studying history: thinking critically about a problem, analyzing it from multiple angles, deriving recommendations from qualitative and quantitative data sources, and writing to persuade and tell meaningful stories. Studying history gave me the ability and confidence to research complex issues more thoroughly, think more critically, and focus on the bigger picture more readily than many of my peers.
