We offer free and confidential support for Calvin students, connecting you with mental health resources both on and off campus.

We offer a variety of support options to match your unique needs and strengths, using a flexible approach called the Stepped Care Model. Our services are designed to help you feel better, succeed in your studies, and build a healthy community.
What to Expect
When you schedule an appointment or sign up for one of our programs, your first visit will be an initial screening. This is required prior to any individual or group therapy, and encouraged for workshops. Here's how the screening works:
- Fill out an electronic intake form to tell us about your reasons for visiting and mental health history, which takes about 20 minutes.
- Talk to a counselor about your concerns and goals, and create a personalized support plan together.
- Leave with a clear plan that includes tools, resources, and referrals to help you move toward your goals.
You are always welcome to reconnect with your counselor to adjust your plan as needed.
Your Customized Support Plan
In your screening appointment, you and your counselor will create a support plan customized to your goals. Your plan may include on-campus support resources, online tools, off-campus referrals, or other CCW programs like a workshop, consultation, group, or individual counseling.
Our Programs
Workshops
The Mental Health Toolbox workshop is designed to help you manage stress, anxiety, and depression. You'll meet in a class-like setting for three, one-hour sessions.
RECHARGE events are held at the end of fall and spring semesters. Drop in and enjoy a variety of stress-reducing activities (including pets!) as you prepare for final exams.
Consultation
If you're facing a specific problem or decision, a one-time consultation can provide the needed support to move forward. Your counselor will help you focus on naming the issue and determine next steps.
Non-therapeutic consultations are also available if you're living out-of-state.
Groups
Process groups provide a space to seek and share support with peers who understand. Skill-building groups help you learn specific mental health tools for life, strengthening your emotional resilience and increasing your confidence. All of our counseling groups are facilitated by a counselor.
Individual counseling
Individual sessions are provided on a one-session-at-a-time basis, often in conjunction with other services. We communicate with you on your progress toward treatment goals and the duration of treatment.
Campus Support
We work closely with partners across campus to support your wellness. Your support plan may include referrals to these offices for areas like career development, health, fitness, intercultural connection, academic skills, spiritual formation, and housing.
Visit our Wellness and Safety page for a list of some of these partners
If you need psychiatric consultation related to medication, we will refer you to Health Services, where services are billed through insurance. Communication between you, your counselor, and your psychiatrist ensures a collaborative treatment approach.
Off-Campus Referrals
We may refer you to community providers for non-acute symptoms or for intensive or specialized treatment beyond the scope of our services. This includes ADHD evaluations or other psychological testing.
